"So, what's the story about violence in Philadelphia?"
A Philadelphia Partnership for Peace Exhibit
@ The Atwater Kent Museum
15 South 7th Street, Philadelphia PA

http://www.philadelphiahistory.org

This exhibit provides historical context to an issue of extraordinary contemporary importance. It engages participants in the reasons for violence in the city since the 1820s, informing them of ways in which communities have addressed the issue and highlighting government initiatives. It also includes a comparison of violence in Philadelphia with other cities. In addition, children are invited to make a personal pledge against violence and to find ways to take action against violent behavior at home and in the neighborhood. There is a list of resources in the city to assist individuals who are living in fear.

The exhibition is the Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia's contribution to the Philadelphia Partnership for Peace, a two-year initiative to combat youth violence, headed by the Free Library of Philadelphia. Providing historical context to an issue of extraordinary contemporary importance, the exhibit is installed as kiosks at five Free Library of Philadelphia branches through 2008:

  • Widener Library, 2808 West Lehigh Avenue
  • Wyoming Library, 231 East Wyoming Avenue
  • Wynnefield Library, 325 Overbrook Avenue
  • Paschalville Library, 6942 Woodland Avenue
  • Blanche A. Nixon/Cobbs Creek Library, 5800 Cobbs Creek Parkway

  • Another partner, the House of UMOJA, based in West Philadelphia, created the docudrama, "A Place to Go Home," that is shown in the Atwater Kent exhibition room daily. The film, produced by Strong Majic Film Productions, traces the House of UMOJA's nonviolence initiatives. It may also be seen at the branch libraries listed above.
