Pause For Our Pets
Pet Dental Care
by Dr. Mindy Cohan
Every February, the veterinary community recognizes National Pet Dental Health Month. It is a time to bring awareness to this common problem amongst dogs and cats. More than 85% of dogs and cats over 4 years of age have some form of dental disease.

Maintaining your pet’s dental health is not just about promoting good breath; it is necessary for your pet’s overall well being. Bacteria in the mouth can travel in the blood stream and affect the heart, liver and kidneys. Diseased teeth can cause bleeding, pain and chewing problems. Eventually, the ligaments and bone holding the tooth in place will weaken and tooth loss will occur.

Signs of dental disease:
- bleeding gums
- swollen gums
- loose or missing teeth
- broken teeth
- tatar (brown coating on teeth)
- bad breath
- difficulty chewing
It is important to check your pet’s mouth on a regular basis. Brushing your pet’s teeth will ensure a healthy mouth and will help you to detect problems in the early stages. If you notice any of the above problems, or see your pet pawing at its mouth, schedule a veterinary visit.
